Alaska and kratom’s legality
Neither advocacy groups nor kratom protestors are publicly active in Alaska. Although some states hotly debate the benefits and risks of the botanical, Alaska has not seen a huge push in arguments from either side.
In 2020, the state’s Controlled Substances Advisory Committee did address the possibility of regulating kratom as a controlled substance. However, the committee agreed that more research and exact language surrounding kratom was needed.
As of 2024, it seems that kratom will remain legal and unregulated in Alaska for the foreseeable future. However, it’s always a good idea to stay up-to-date on trends and information before purchasing kratom products — breakthrough scientific studies may be published, and laws can change at any time.
AKA: Kratom advocacy and awareness
The American Kratom Association (AKA), the leading U.S. organization for kratom advocacy and awareness, stands in full support of nationwide regulations that would mandate kratom vendors to adhere to quality and safety standards.
The AKA believes raising kratom awareness and public education is paramount to the enjoyment of the botanical, and provides access to resources for both kratom beginners and seasoned users.
The kratom curious can find a guide to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice Standards) Qualified Vendors, which includes MIT45, on the AKA website to ensure they’re purchasing from reputable brands and receiving quality products.
The organization’s advocacy could lead to kratom safety regulations in every state, including Alaska.
The proposed federal Kratom Consumer Protection Act (KCPA)
For the past several years, the U.S. Congress has been considering federal kratom legislation. The proposed bill, the KCPA (also referred to as S.3039) would establish an FDA task force committed to evaluating the safety of all kratom products and measuring the health benefits and risks of taking kratom.
The KCPA would also require all kratom vendors to:
- Obtain a vendor license to manufacture, distribute, and sell kratom products
- Ensure the purity of all kratom products (some disreputable brands currently include dangerous additives, such as heavy metals, in their available products)
- Place transparent and accurate labeling on every kratom product
The KCPA could allow kratom enthusiasts peace of mind as they enjoy legally purchased products as it will ensure universal quality and safety standards within the national kratom industry.
