There’s nothing wrong with deciding to remove kratom from your routine, either temporarily or permanently. However, as is the case with everything from sugar to caffeine, cutting certain things out of your diet may come with withdrawal side effects.
Don’t worry—kratom withdrawal shouldn’t be anything that requires going to a 72-hour (or any other) detox facility. Truthfully, we wouldn’t be making and selling it if we thought it had that kind of addictive potential. Nevertheless, a small segment of kratom users may struggle with kratom withdrawal.
before you stop taking kratom, it’s smart to be prepared for some potential discomfort.
Physical Signs of Kratom Withdrawal
- Less Physical Comfort: Just as taking kratom has the potential to occasionally promote physical comfort, stopping kratom may lead to the opposite in the form of mild headaches or muscle aches.
- Trouble Sleeping: Primarily experienced among those who use red-vein kratom or low-mitragynine kratom extracts to unwind.
- Fatigue: Feeling tired is a common side effect of kratom cessation, as expected from this energy-boosting botanical.
- Restless Legs and Other Signs: Some people can experience restless legs and/or sweating, especially before or during bedtime. A stuffy or running nose and nausea are other potential signs of kratom withdrawal.
Psychological Signs of Kratom Withdrawal
- A Desire for Kratom: Again, whether it’s coffee, sugar, kratom, or something else with effects you enjoy, taking less or none of this substance can lead to cravings. These cravings, however, are very rarely overwhelming and tend to subside quickly.
- Increased Anxiousness: Because some people enjoy kratom for its calming effects, not using it anymore may temporarily result in a heightened sense of nervousness. Again, these reactions are usually mild compared to stopping most prescription-strength anti-anxiety remedies.
- Decreased Mood: If kratom has given you a mood boost in the past, you’ll have to rely on other means and/or work through some irritability for a short period of time.
How Long Does Kratom Withdrawal Last?
A comforting fact is that kratom withdrawal is temporary. Depending on your tolerance level, these side effects can be unpleasant. Fortunately, knowing what to expect can help make this time much more manageable.
- 8 – 12 Hours: Typically, this is the time when mild withdrawal will become noticeable, including a poor mood, runny or stuffy nose, and/or more sweating than usual.
- 12 – 24 Hours: Some people notice slightly increasing cravings during their first full day without kratom. You may also experience some difficulty sleeping and, in severe cases, bouts of nausea.
- Days 1 – 3: At this point, some fatigue and physical discomfort are commonly felt as kratom continues eliminating itself from your body.
- Days 4 – 6: By now, you’ll likely experience the effects lessening in severity and duration. Those users who had developed only a mild tolerance to kratom may no longer experience any appreciable withdrawal effects during this period.
- Weeks 1 – 2: Most people notice an end to the physical effects of kratom withdrawal after the first week without kratom.
Whether taking a short break from kratom or removing it from your life completely, knowing what to expect can make this journey as easy as possible. Use this time to begin a new hobby or return to one you previously enjoyed. Soon, your kratom withdrawal will be a thing of the past.
